The Team had another great weekend in Edmonton, playing at the Canada Cup Qualifying event. This event is usually graced with top teams vying for their spot in the Canada Cup, and a chance to become one of the teams at next year’s Olympic Trials, also being played in Edmonton. Of course, the lads had already qualified for the trials so the CCQ was an opportunity to stay sharp while playing some of the country’s best teams.

The Team dropped their first round game to Steve Petryk’s squad by a 3-7 score but bounced back, reeling off four consecutive wins to qualify out of the “B” side, and continued on their winning ways through the playoffs right to the final game against BC’s Team Ursel.

Unfortunately the curling lords weren’t smiling upon The Team in the final, as they dropped the match 6-8 to Ursel in a well-fought battle. Still, the Team had a great run and have added more points to the CTRS and OOM standings, and they’ll meet the other Quarter Finalists from this event at the upcoming Canada Cup.

The lads are off to enjoy a bit of “Ryder Cup” style curling, playing against “Team World” in the Continental Cup event. It should be entertaining!

The Team headed to la belle province to defend their 2007 title at The National, the second stop on the 2008/09 Grand Slam circuit. And it looked like the Team was going to repeat, sailing into the playoffs without a loss. But with the sudden-death nature of playoffs, one loss and you’re done…and thats what happened to the Team in the Semi-Final, with the lads suffering a 2-5 loss to Toronto’s Wayne Middaugh.

Looking at the numbers, the team worked a solid defensive gameplay, but failed to capitalize on opportunities to score multiple-point ends throughout the event, which ultimately cost the Team in their SF loss to Middaugh (HE of only 30%).

The Team will regroup and get back into action in week three of its four week road stand, heading to Edmonton for the upcoming Canada Cup Qualifier event.

The team began four-in-a-row event marathon in Saskatoon at the PointOptical Curling Classic. This event is a great one showcasing top talent mainly from Western Canada (Sask and Alberta), and Team Martin played a solid defensive event, which is what you do on straighter ice in the Prairie Province.

The Team lost only one game during the preliminary round, going down to Brad Heidt’s foursome by a 4-5 score, but managed to win the rest of their matches, qualifying out of the B section. However the team suffered a Quarter Final loss to Saskatchewan’s Darrell McKee by a 4-6 score, allowing McKee to steal the 6th and 7th ends en route to victory. Still the team fared well, qualifying in every event played so far this season.

There’s no rest for the weary, as the Team must hop onto a plane right away to Quebec City, the host city of the next Grand Slam curling event, The National.

Its been a three year streak in Bonnyville for Team Martin in winning this weekend’s event over Edmonton’s Jamie King 4-2 in the final. The team cruised undefeated into the final, but faced a determined King. By stealing second and third end singles, the Team’s defensive play shut King out from any real opportunities to score more than singles, in a tightly played game. The team was too sharp in the Quarter and Semi finals, rolling over Team Swyripa and Team Schille by 7-2 scores respectively.
